BACKPACK SAFETY

The popularity of backpacks as a means to transport school books and necessities has raised concerns about the weight, design and features of backpacks.  Worn correctly, backpacks should not pose any safety or health concern.  When backpacks are too heavy or worn incorrectly they can cause problems.  The following information is based on the safety guidelines of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Backpack Features and Benefits:
  • Lightweight – consider the overall weight of the backpack and load to be carried
  • Padded back – padding adds comfort and protects against inside objects
  • Padded shoulder straps – wide padded straps keep the straps from cutting into shoulders and restricting circulation, causing pain
  • Two shoulder straps – distribute the weight more evenly than one strap bags
  • Waist strap – waist straps are beneficial in distributing the weight of heavy loads more evenly
  • Rolling backpacks – good for heavy loads but may not be good choice for stairs.  Weather, such as rain and snow should also be a consideration
Injury Prevention:
  • Pack light – the American Academy of Pediatrics’ guideline states backpack weight should not exceed 10% to 20% of the student’s body weight.
  • Organize backpack contents – distribute load among all compartments with the heaviest items closest to the back
  • Utilize lockers – store books in lockers when not needed to lighten load
  • Use shoulder straps – using both shoulder straps distribute weight and decrease the risk of spine curvature that my be caused by using only one shoulder strap
  • Adjust straps – backpacks should be worn two inches above the waist and close to the body
  • Lifting and bending – avoid bending over from the waist while wearing or lifting a heavy backpack; bend down using both knees
Cautions:
  • Do not ignore back pain, see a doctor
  • Posture problems can cause curvature of the spine and chronic back, joint and muscle pain
  • Don't overpack a backpack, not only does it compromise the integrity of the backpack it makes the load unstable
What to Do:
  • Find out if the school allows enough time between classes for locker stops
  • Get a second set of text books to leave at home
